"I believe that if those killings were lawful under the rules of engagement, then the rules of engagement are wrong, deeply wrong," said WikiLeaks spokesperson Julian Assange. He was referring to the killings of a dozen people in Baghdad by the crew of Apache helicopters in 2007.
Two Reuters staff were among those killed, and although Reuters pressed the US military to launch an investigation, and obtained permission to see material from the attack under the Freedom of Information Act, the video was not released until yesterday (5 April), when it was leaked by WikiLeaks. The group, which actively leaks suppressed evidence in an effort to 'to fight government and corporate corruption' obtained the encrypted video of the attack from military whistleblowers, decrypted it and released on the internet at www.collateralmurder.com. I decided not to embed it here.
You can read the full article at Reuters, and view stills from the video. The BBC, among others, has also covered the story. The remarks made by the helicopter crew are as harrowing as the images.
