'Suicidal' statues were not Gormley's intention

British sculptor Anthony Gormley's lifesize casts of himself installed on various rooftops in New York city have prompted anxious emergency calls from people who thought they were about to witness a suicide.

Gormley's remarks to the New York Times, just before the opening of the exhibition that 'If people think of death and suicide, it's a sad reflection on evolution' come across as pretty misjudged: I'd have thought that, in fact, it's a tremendously positive to see that complete strangers in a vast city care enough about what - understandably - looks like a fellow human being in distress to do something about it.
