The Rolling Stones contribute to Record Store Day with a previously unreleased track, 'Plundered My Soul', which was initially meant to be included in their 1972 double album Exile On Main Street. Limited editions of exclusive tracks by - among many others - The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Goldfrapp, Laurie Anderson, Elvis Costello, and Lilly Allen will be released on 17 April and will be on sale presumably only in independent record shops. Many participating shops will host in-store gigs, so if you live in the US or the UK, click to check out what's on in your area.
Record Store Day celebrates, and promotes, independent record shops, which, partly because of the unequal competition with chain music stores and giant online-sellers such as Amazon, are, sadly (inevitably?) on the decline. The BBC reports that there are now only 269 independent record shops in the UK, a third less than in 2005.
