Every interpretation of Bluebeard (Blaubart, Barbe Bleue) that I've read suggests that the colour blue signified wealth, power, and the legendary villain's otherworldly nature. For some reason, I feel there must be more to the name, but, whatever it is, it seems to elude scholars.
The tale has been reworked into a grimly erotic story by Angela Carter in the The Bloody Chamber. In this short animated film, however, Bluebeard finally meets his equally legendary match (thanks, M.).
